MEET OUR COACHES

  • BRETT ROBINSON

    Brett holds the Australian for the Half Marathon and Marathon with personal best times of 59:57 and 2:07:31 respectively. Since emerging through the junior ranks as a top 1500m runner, Brett has developed into a world-class senior athlete, seeing him make finals appearances in the 5000m at both the 2013 World Championships and 2016 Rio Olympics. In recent years, he has shifted focus to the Marathon, Brett competed at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics. Unfortunately he finished with a disappointing result yet learned valuable lessons along the way. Since the Olympics Brett has improved his marathon tremendously, Winning the 2021 Melbourne Marathon, finishing 8th at the 2022 Marathon and breaking Rob De Castella's 36 year old Australian Marathon record.

    Brett developed his coaching craft from mentors throughout his decade-long career; Philo Saunders (Senior Physiologist, AIS) and Nic Bideau (Melbourne Track Club) have played a significant role in his ascendency.

  • CAMILLE FRENCH

    Camille dreamt of competing at the Olympic Games since she was 5 years old. In 2021 that dream came true when she competed in both the 5,000m and 10,000m events on the track at the Tokyo Olympic Games. She welcomed her daughter Sienna into the world in 2022 and in 2023 she competed in her first marathon to qualify for the Paris Olympic Games.

    Camille is passionate about sharing her love of running and competing with others. She loves coaching people to chase after their own running goals and helping them find a balance between their work and social life, as well as finding time to train, improve and reach their own athletic goals. Whether it’s coaching someone to run their first marathon or chase down a time they have had their sights on for years she enjoys helping each person reach their potential.

    She has a Psychology degree and hoping to one day complete her post graduate studies.

  • COLLIS BIRMINGHAM

    Collis was a professional runner for over 13 years, experiencing success across distances from the 1500m to the Half Marathon. Career highlights include representing Australia in the 5000m at the 2008 Beijing Olympics and 2012 London Olympics, and an eighth-place finish at the World Cross Country Championships - an event considered among the toughest races in the world. He was also a finalist in the World Athletics Championship 5000m and holds some impressive personal best times - including a 13.09 (5000m), 27.29 (10000m) and 60:56 (Half Marathon).

    Now a full-time Running Coach Collis works with Australia’s top athletes at Melbourne Track Club, is a Generation ’32 scholarship Coach at the Victorian Institute of Sport and has a passionate group of Pulse Runners he is helping.

  • JACK RAYNER

    Jack is one of Australia’s most exciting and dynamic distance runners. Making his Marathon debut in 2019 Jack ran the second-fastest Australian debut ever running 2:11:06. After the 2021 Tokyo Olympics Jack turned his attention back to the shorter distances which turned out to be a very successful move as he broke the Australian 10000m record running 27:15.35 and later the 10km Road Australian record running 27:43. He holds several Australian road running and half marathon titles, notably taking out the inaugural 2018 Commonwealth Games Half Marathon – a significant achievement for a then, 22-year-old.

    Jack’s coaching expertise stems from his years as a professional athlete, guidance from mentors, and his previous role as a Nike Run Club coach.

  • JOEL TOBIN-WHITE

    Starting little athletics at the age of 5 Joel has been running the majority of his life. After rising through the junior ranks with podiums at Australian Junior Cross Country Championships he transitioned to the sport of Triathlon. He spent four years between 2013-2016 in the Victorian Institute of Sport triathlon team racing across the globe before deciding that running was his true passion. Joining Melbourne Track Club in 2017 he spent the next few years trialling himself over a handful of distances before his breakthrough result in the 2019 Marugame Half Marathon finishing 11th running 62:03. Joel's athletic goals are to focus on the longer distances with the goal of running as fast as possible while balancing his work as both a running coach and podcast host on For The Kudos.

    Having spent nearly a decade in high performance competition Joel will apply his knowledge of endurance sport to the Pulse coaching team.

  • KEVIN BATT

    Kevin Batt is a two-time Ireland 5000m National champion and sub-4 minute miler. His experience in training as an international track athlete is now accessible through Pulse Running. As well as competing on the international track circuit, he is a local coach in Sydney where he resides.

    Kevin's athletic results include: 6 x NCAA D2 National Champion & 2019 Australian Half Marathon Champion.

    His PB's include: Half Marathon - 64:12, Mile - 3.59, 3000m - 7.51 and 5000m - 13:39.

  • SARAH BILLINGS

    Sarah is an elite middle-distance runner who represented Australia at the 2016 World Junior Championships in both the 800m and 4x400m. She has a personal best of 54.39 (400m), 2.01.66 (800m), 4.06.77 (1500m) and 15.41.41 (5000m). With her eyes set on making a senior team, Sarah is a member of the established Melbourne Track Club, training under the guidance of coach Nic Bideau.

    Sarah began running at 10 years old after her PE teacher identified her talent. She balanced running and netball throughout school but ultimately chose to pursue running. Sarah has competed on the international circuit from the age of 18 whilst earning a Bachelor Degree of Architecture and Construction at the University of Melbourne.

    Sarah’s coaching experience includes; secondary school athletics/cross country at Ruyton Girls’ School, primary and secondary school athletics/cross country at Wesley college. She has also worked as a private coach for youth para athletes.

  • SELMA KAJAN

    Selma is a former elite middle-distance runner who represented Australia at the 2016 Olympic Games in the 800m in Rio. Her personal best times of 2:01 (800m) and 4:13 (1500m), saw her compete at a competitive level on the track for over a decade, both as a talented junior and senior athlete. She was a member of the established Melbourne Track Club, training under the guidance of coach Nic Bideau.

    Since retiring from competitive athletics in 2018, she has balanced working full-time as a marketer and keeping up running recreationally, enjoying Park Runs and the occasional fun run.

    She is passionate about helping others reach their running goals and finding a balance between work and training demands.

  • SIMON & HAYLEY FIELD

    Haley is a former professional athlete having represented Australia at the 2004 Athens Olympics in the 10,000m, 2002 Commonwealth Games and four times at the World Cross Country Championships. Haley was also the Australian Cross Country Champion, National 5000m Champion, two-time Zatopek 10,000 winner and two-time winner of the Sydney City to Surf. Haley’s experience and passion for the sport is infectious and she is passionate about giving back and passing on her experience to help others achieve their goals. Haley pbs are 10,000 31.43 and Marathon 2.33.47 (on debut) 72.38 half marathon 15.18 5,000m

    Simon is a former professional athlete having represented Australia at the World Cross Country Championships, Ekiden Relays and World Student Games, Simon has been involved in the sport for over 30 years and brings a wealth of knowledge and experience, a former Melbourne Track Club athlete Simon’s career highlights include bronze medal in the Australian Cross Country Championships, 62nd place in the World Cross Country Championship and former Victorian 1500m Champion.

  • TESS MARKS

    Tess started running when she moved to a small country town called Howqua. She fell in love with the trail running there and trained for a race from the bottom of Mt Stirling to the top of the adjoining mountain, Mt Buller.

    Upon her return to Melbourne she transitioned to playing AFL as part of the VAFA league where she spent 3 years playing in the Premier A division.

    When contact sports were cancelled in 2020 due to lockdowns, Tess made her return to running. She fell in love with road racing and managed to lower her half marathon PB by 17 minutes and her full marathon PB by 13 minutes (winning her age group at Gold Coast Marathon in the process).

  • TOM HALL

    Tom has loved to run since he was a young kid and has always taken a likening to the longer distances. Mixing a few marathons each year with some trail races between, Tom loves using running to get amongst the natural environment.

    Growing up in Melbourne's Inner North, Tom enjoys his running most around the Studley Park trails and Yarra River. Tom's best performances have come in the marathon with a PB of 2:34 and a 3rd place at the 2023 Great Ocean Road Marathon.

    Always enjoying a chat on all things running, Tom makes himself as accessible as possible to his athletes to keep communication flowing on a regular basis. Equally where possible, Tom loves helping out his athletes in person with time trials and important sessions to assist them achieving their performance goals.

  • TOM THORPE

    After trying everything else and failing, Tom soon fell in love with Athletics and Cross Country as it developed into a significant part of his life.

    Tom didn’t have the initial success of many of his counterparts, but with time & steady progression has developed into an Australian representative at the World University Cross Country Championships (2020). The back-to-back 2021/2022 Victorian 5000m Champion, Tom has an understanding of high-performance sport, alongside years of experience coaching recreational, state, national and international athletes aged 12 up to 65.

    Tom is a Level 2 Athletics Australia accredited coach and has worked under the guidance of Tim O'Shaughnessy (Wesley College) and Nick Bowden (Aussie Aths), to understand the fundamentals of physical literacy, program planning, periodisation & connecting with his athletes. Working with coach & mentor Tim O’Shaughnessy for 14 years, Tom has a great appreciation for how life-changing a great coach can be to an athlete.

  • ALASTAIR CHRISTY

    After years of playing high level cricket, Alastair found his passion for distance running at 19. For the majority of his early 20’s, Alastair worked hard to balance his electrical apprenticeship alongside running at a high level, helping him understand the challenges that arise with waking up early, working long hours, and training late in the afternoon. Alastair now works part-time as a sparky and studies Osteopathy at RMIT.

    Since joining his current coach Tim O’Shaughnessy in early 2022, Alastair has been a regular top 10 finisher in the XCR series for Box Hill, has run his 5000m PB of 14:01 and a Half Marathon PB of 65:03 in Adelaide. He is also now a Brooks sponsored athlete.

    He loves watching those around him experience success and values creating strong relationships with his fellow teammates.

    Training amongst the best distance athletes in Australia, his last 2 years training alongside MTC have brought him a wealth of knowledge and he is excited to apply it by coaching fellow runners with their goals and aspirations.

  • ROSE DILLON

    Rose is a previous Elite Triathlete that represented New Zealand internationally in Sprint and Olympic Distance triathlons for a period of over 7 years. After stepping away from elite triathlon in 2020, Rose has found her passion in running.

    Using her multidiscipline experience gained from triathlon, Rose races on the trails and on the road. So far with her time in running, she has lowered her half-marathon PB by 7 minutes, set course records in the Mount Mee half-marathon and the Penguin half-marathon, and has debuted in the marathon with a 3:01 time.

    Working as a lawyer for a renewable energy company, Rose has an appreciation for the juggle of work, life and training. Her coaching experience stems from working alongside high-performance coaches and athletes, and from periods of self-coaching. She is passionate about helping individuals to realise their potential and achieve their goals, and is eager to share over a decade of experience in competitive sport with her athletes.
